The Missouri Mycological Society is absolutely overjoyed to announce that we’re offering FREE mushroom DNA barcode sequencing again this year in an ongoing partnership with Mycota Lab!

You can help contribute to our understanding of fungal distribution here in Missouri by joining forces with other citizen scientists across the state to document the diversity of fungi that occur here. It’s simple: just snap a few photos of your fungal finds, upload them to iNaturalist, dry the specimens, print and fill out our special voucher slips, and mail them in!

We’ve been building an impressive database over the past three years and we need as many people as possible to help us continue to make amazing discoveries. We’re not just interested in your unusual or uncommon finds; we want to get as many samples as possible to establish a baseline of what fungi occur where in the state. We submitted over 2500 specimens for sequencing last year, and over ¾ of them so far have turned out to be undescribed species and even a handful of species that are completely new to science!

If you want to be a part of this exciting and important project, head over to mycomap.org/mycomap-mo for more details on how to get started. Be sure to share this post so we can reach as many folks as possible! We hope you’ll join us in working toward a census of Missouri macrofungi!
