FORAY: Kennedy Woods - Forest Park

Yes, there are mushrooms in the heart of the city!  We will be exploring all things fungal in Kennedy Forest within Forest Park.  We will meet at the #7 picnic pavilion at 8:30 am on 8/10/24 and conduct a survey of the various fungi growing in this woodland habitat.  Forest Park Forever and the Kennedy Woods Advisory Group (KWAG) have been working hard for years to restore the native habitats in Kennedy Forest and Kennedy Savanna.  These landscapes have been ecologically degraded through the long history of land use in the park, which allowed invasive plant species like bush honeysuckle and wintercreeper to take hold, flourish and outcompete the diverse native flora of the area.  Along with prescribed fire and selective, non-native tree thinning, targeted chemical treatments of exotic plants are one of the many tools used in the process of ecological restoration-particularly in the initial phases.  For this reason, we do not recommend that people consume mushrooms they collect during this foray.  At last year's foray in Forest Park, the group collected over 35 mushroom species.
