Jay Justice states the identification of this mushroom is not confirmed in Missouri, therefore we use the "f" and call it the variety "annulosulfurea". Please read the following:
Based on Rod Tulloss' web site concerning Amanita rubescens, Mr. Tulloss states that "to date, it has not been found in the Americas where there are a number of rubescent species. A. rubescens has the ring placed high on the stem, skirt-like, white at first, becoming cream, collapsing and tearing, with a thickened edge. He states that A. rubescens has only been documented in northern Europe.
Mr. Tulloss states the name Amanita rubescens f. annulosulfurea is applied to those specimens of Amanita rubescens which differ only in having a sulfur-yellow ring on the stem. Dr. C. Bas (Liden) and Rod Tulloss have discussed this species. Dr. Bas informed Mr. Tulloss that Dr. Bas has searched diligently for other macroscopic or microscopic characters correlated with a colored annulus and that Dr. Bas has found none. This being the case, the name seems unlikely to have any taxonomic value.
The Missouri Mycological Society has determined that in the proper classification of this specimen, the identification used will lye with the person using this information. |
