This is the most frequently collected Pluteus and one of the most common mushrooms in North America. It is edible, but good only when very young. Close examination by Dr. Methven (see annotation above) recommends reading the paper by Andrew M. Minnis et. al. on Pluteus cervinus, as this specimen of Pluteus cervinus is actually a species complex.
