The INCURABLE EPICUREANS
The Incurable Epicureans is a culinary group of MOMS members who love to cook and eat. There are three to four dinners a year. Each dinner has a specially planned theme and menu where the group may explore various regions of the world, culinary époques, or whatever else sounds intriguing. Usually the group gathers in the home of a member, but we have used park shelters, working studios, and rentable venues that allow self-catering.
Late winter of 2016 found us at a favorite site, Ken and LaRee Gilberg’s Herbaria to enjoy the first of the year’s dinners themed around river travel. Our menu highlighted the Mississippi River and its influence on Gulf Coast Cooking. Crawfish Etouffee, Vegetable Gumbo, Ma-que Choux, Bread Pudding and Pralines were just some of the delicious treats. At the Rolby’s this summer, we followed the Mekong River from its headwaters in China and the Himalayas through Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Laotian Yellow Rice with Duck, Cambodian Fish Baked in Spicy Custard, a fabulous assortment of Asian salads were some of the main courses. Black Sticky Rice Pudding and Thai Coconut cookies were some of the yummy desserts. At the end of November 2016, a dinner at Soulard Station will take us to our Cruise along the Danube, a voyage steeped in history. From Austria, through Slovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, we will enjoy Old World specialties such as Austrian Black Forest Stuffed and Smoked Pork Loin, Hungarian Fish Paprikas, Slovakian Nudel Pudding, Bulgarian Mushrooms with Black Olives, and Yugoslavian Honey Cake.
The club’s 2017 schedule is in the planning stages and may include visiting the ‘toe’ of Italy’s boot, Calabria, the southern tip of Italy that few know. We might visit the Pacific Rim, from the fragrant harbor of Hong Kong to Tahiti’s palmy beaches and Australia and New Zealand’s vast down under. We could be dining in exotic Turkey, where life revolves around food, and where movement and survival have been the root of Turkish cuisine.
Because we meet most often in member’s homes, the club must limit membership to 35, with each being a member of MOMS. Dues are $15 per person payable the 1st day of each year. The Incurable Epicureans group is open to all MOMS members. The first 35 to pay their dues form the group for that year. Prior to each dinner a menu is e-mailed and every member who plans to attend signs up to bring one of the menu’s dishes. They each research and prepare their chosen item as a means to learn more about the world of food.
